Hinterlands
A new body of work by Christopher and Nicola Cox
An otherworldly collision of mythic folk art and bucolic idealism, exploring the ceaseless progress of nature.

Hinterlands
noun
1. The remote areas of a country far away from the coast or the banks of major rivers.
Similar: the back of beyond, the wilds
The Cox London studio and workshops in north-east London are surrounded by unique landscapes where noisy urban sprawl meets peaceful protected marshlands and historic waterways. This is where they took a “dig where you stand” approach to the creation of new works. The capsule collection evolved slowly in their studio between 2025 and 2026, shaped as much by instinct as by intention.
Sometimes wild and unruly sometimes destructive or majestic, art-historical references from various periods and geographies are filtered through the contemporary lens of the artists and distilled in the expert hands of the Coxes’ specialist teams. Stories expertly woven and wrought in bronze, iron, tôle and brass with considered additions of glass, pearls, parchment and passementerie.

Green Man
VIEW THE WORK
Commanding in scale and rendered with authority and exuberance, these gaping cast-bronze masks exhale a hazy profusion of intricate ironwork flora.
Disgorging Heads
Inspired by the medieval Green Man tradition, their lineage can be traced across Europe and into ancient Mesopotamia, with early representations dating back to the 3rd or 4th Century.

Asp Lantern
VIEW THE WORK
The pair of cast bronze Asps, coil and writhe through the top and bottom rings of the lanterns, each clasping a striking tassel in their mouth. A deep verdigris patina, evocative of excavated artefacts, underscores the ancient narrative. The brass work frames, back lit by a warm glow through faux-parchment panels.
Serpents
Symbols of both good and evil, the duality of serpents makes them particularly fascinating subjects. Despite the myth of Queen Cleopatra's intentional 'death by asp' the serpent is also a strong symbol of rebirth and renewal through its associations with the ancient Greek god of medicine and healing Aclepius, and goddess of health, Hygeia.

Deco Verde Lantern
VIEW THE WORK
A hexagonal lantern that combines both Classical and Modernist design references through its stepped grammar and reductivist ornament. Patinated using traditional methods to create a verdigris patina.

Fig Wisteria Infinite Vine (3.5m/11.5ft)

This monumental candelabrum, is an otherworldly marriage of Wisteria and Fig, cast and sculpted in bronze and rising freely, restrained only by the architecture of its setting. The climbing foliate forms pay homage to the ceaseless force of nature.
A solitary mouse ascends the vine, almost imperceptible from twisting tendrils, while a curious companion observes from below, through inset pearl eyes.
Each unique edition is made to order and therefore can be tailored in scale to suit individual projects.
